My hair does not curl. It’s just a fact of life that I’ve accepted over the years – I’ve tried curling with a straightener, with regular curling tongs, wire curlers, you name it – my hair just wants nothing to do with it. I recently tried sleeping in sponge curlers – as well as looking really dumb, it somehow actually straightened my hair out more (wut). Nigel Stanislaus was at an event with me once and managed to coax my hair into staying curled for two days using a hair straightener on the highest setting, but I don’t have him on standby and anyhoo, I’m afraid to try again because I’m pretty sure the heat would destroy my hair.

So with this tragic pursuit of hair movement, I was ridiculously excited when I heard about Luxcurly. Luxcurly was invented by an Asian, and has an auto rotating function, which means you don’t kill your arms trying to curl your hair, and it’s a lot harder to burn yourself. It’s a lot less intimidating than the new autocurlers that suck your hair into a hole, possibly never to return – your hair remains on the outside of the wand, you just don’t need to fiddle around with twisting the wand. It’s genius!

Here’s what all the bits look like on the Lux Natural:

Barrel – 28 mm tourmaline ceramic barrel in a pretty subdued gold colour.

Rubberised clamp – you stick the end of your hair in this.

Bidirectional spin buttons – so you can spin the hair left or right. Apparently the prettiest way is to curl your hair away from your face, so “L” for the hair on the right side of your face and “R” for the hair on your left side. Confusing, I know, but the barrel spins slowly enough that you can work it out pretty quickly.

Not pictured:

Prop stand integrated into the handle – so that you can put the curler down without it burning the crap out of your counter or starting a fire.

Swivel cord – so you don’t tangle yourself up.

LED temperature display and adjuster – the curler heats up to 220 °C, but I’ve been finding that 180 °C has been enough for my hair.

I’ve been finding this curler super easy to use. I clamp a 1/2 inch section of hair, send the barrel auto-twirling one way, hold for 10 seconds, uncurl it by auto-twirling the barrel in reverse, then unclamp and I’ve got a curl! My whole head takes 10-15 minutes to curl and with a general dose of hairspray, my hair stays that way all day (and I get loose second day waves as well).

I’ve been using John Frieda Frizz Ease Dream Curls Air Dry Waves Styling Foam and TRESemmé Perfectly (Un)done Wave Creating Sea Foam on my hair before curling (still haven’t worked out which one I prefer), and Marc Anthony Oil of Morocco Argan Oil Hairspray all over afterwards.

Here’s what it looks like immediately after curling:

And this is what it looks like 10 hours afterwards on a damp rainy day:

I’m absolutely in love with this curler, as you can probably tell from the massive amount of crazy-grinning curly hair selfies in this post. I usually have a few improvements to suggest for most products I try, but this one is pretty much perfect, as long as the motor doesn’t wear down! I’ve only had it for about a month, so unfortunately I can’t comment on its durability, but I haven’t seen any complaints online so I’m assuming it’s pretty good. There’s a 2 year warranty that you can buy for $30. The price point is also very reasonable – it’s $119, which is in the same ballpark as VS Sassoon and about half the price of a GHD curler.

You can grab a Luxcurly curler here on their website. I’ve convinced a few people to buy this already!
