Oat is an ingredient that I think is really underrated in skincare. It’s not as exotic-sounding as some other botanical ingredients, but its reputation for being super soothing is well earned. It’s the star ingredient in Aveeno’s Skin Relief product range, tailored for very dry skin.

The Science of Oats

Oats have been used for soothing dry and itchy skin for centuries. It’s still a popular home remedy – you might’ve remembered taking baths with oats as a kid to soothe rashes and chicken pox. There’s evidence that it acts as an anti-inflammatory and helps restore the skin barrier.

There are a number of substances in oats that contribute to their skin-soothing effects:

  • Beta-glucan: This is a form of soluble dietary fibre that acts as a humectant moisturiser that helps skin hold onto water.
  • Avenanthramides – These highly potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds are unique to oats. They help improve itchy, dry skin and reduce the appearance of redness.
  • Lipids – Oats contain omega-3 (linolenic) and omega-6 (linoleic) triglycerides and free fatty acids that act as emollient moisturisers.
  • Starch – This acts as a humectant moisturiser.
  • Antioxidants – As well as the avenanthramides, there are also polysaccharides, vitamin E, enzymes and flavonoids that can act as antioxidants to protect skin by absorbing free radical damage.

Aveeno’s Skin Relief range uses Triple Oat Complex, which is a blend of oat flour, oat extract and oat oil.

Aveeno Skin Relief Lotion

Aveeno is known for its body moisturisers formulated with oat – for example, their Skin Relief Cream outperformed a leading ceramide cream at hydrating skin in a clinical study.

The Skin Relief Lotion, which also has shea butter, is clinically shown to provide 24 hour skin hydration, and soothe the itching and discomfort of severe dry skin. It’s perfect for people with sensitive skin that needs hydration, and is fragrance-free, which can be difficult to find in body products.

I’ve been using the Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion over the winter (I’m in Australia).

Ingredients (US format)
Active: Dimethicone 1.2% (Skin Protectant)
Inactive: Water, Glycerin, Distearyldimonium Chloride, Petrolatum, Isopropyl Palmitate, Cetyl Alcohol, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour, Behenyl Alcohol, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Oil, Steareth-20, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Sodium Chloride

My skin is generally oily, but it does get quite dehydrated, dry and itchy in winter. I’ve found that the Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion has been fantastic at soothing even my dry shins and cracked elbows. It absorbs quickly and doesn’t feel greasy, and the hydration lasts until my next shower.

Since there’s a lot of glycerin in it already, I don’t feel the need to layer an extra water-grabbing humectant product underneath, but I do use it on damp skin for extra hydration. The pump top also makes it very handy to use in the bathroom!

Have you tried using oat-based skincare? What did you think?
