La Mav is an Australian, certified organic, natural-based skincare range. They’re also cruelty free and eco-friendly, and most importantly, use ingredients with proven results, which is a rarity in the “natural” market, and something I’m very excited about! Exhibit A: an ingredients list on their website, which specifically states the mechanism of action of each ingredient, in simple terms. Win!

I recently had the opportunity to meet the founder of the line, Tarj Mavi, a passionate mother and skincare obsessive ex-veterinarian. Her skincare journey began when she found that skin-lightening products were too harsh, and discovered that natural ingredients which had similar effects weren’t available for purchase in a formulated product.

There’s clearly been a lot of thought put into La Mav’s products. The bases are full of fatty acid-rich oils (e.g. jojoba, rosehip, calendula) and vitamins A, C and E, which all are great for the skin (check out my earlier series on vitamins in skincare). In addition, specific bioactive plant extracts are included depending on the targeted skin concern, with an emphasis on selecting non-irritating ingredients.

La Mav have recently released four limited edition Christmas box sets which contain three full sized products and one sample which address specific problems. I’ve tried out the Skin Brightening pack (curse you, freckles!), but there’s also Ultra-Hydrating, Anti-Ageing and Lift & Firm packs.

The Skin Brightening pack contains:

Rumex Advanced Lightening Day Creme (50 mL) – This contains the key ingredient Rumex occidentalis extract, which evens out skin tone by preventing one of the pigment-producing proteins in your skin from working. It comes in a hygienic pump bottle which unfortunately tends to shoot cream out violently unless you remember to cup your hand around the dispenser (or maybe I’m getting stronger than I thought). Apart from that, the cream has an excellent texture and isn’t too greasy.

Vit-C Advanced Nightly Repair Nectar (30 mL) – My favourite of the products in this box! This is a sticky oil which smells like citrus and comes in a stylish rectangular glass bottle fitted with a dropper. Vitamin C reduces pigmentation, and it’s also full of jojoba, apricot kernel and evening primrose oils which I think has been responsible for evening out bumps on my skin. Even though it says “nightly”, I’ve been using this in the morning as well, which makes my face turn into an oil slick, but I keep using it because it’s so good, and really have to force myself to only use it at night.

Anti Dark-Circle and Ultra-Firm Eye Gel (15 mL) – As well as skin-lightening vitamin C, this has hyaluronic acid, a humectant which increases the amount of water in your skin, plumping it up and evening its texture. I haven’t really noticed any change in my dark circles, probably because my circles are due to superficial veins and chronic lack of sleep rather than pigmentation! It’s made the skin around my eyes feel less delicate though.

Vitamin-C Brightening Serum (3 mL) – I wish this sample was bigger – it’s obvious that this is the magic bullet of the pack, brightening-wise! Pimped out with four potent ingredients: vitamin C (decreases pigmentation), bearberry extract (safer natural form of the powerful skin lightening hydroquinone), Rumex occidentalis extract and Glabridin (both help prevent the production of further pigment).

The other three packs contain the award-winning Bio-A7 Firming Eye Lotion, which mainly acts on the texture of the skin around the eyes to perk them up. Overall, the boxes make a great introduction to the brand and are excellent value for money, with a skincare pack suitable for most people.

I’m expecting big things from La Mav – it’s developed by people who are very passionate about their products, and have the technical know-how to develop effective and natural skincare, plus they’re interested in educating consumers about how their products work, which of course is also a passion of mine 🙂

La Mav Limited Edition Christmas Box Sets retail for $99.95 (valued at over $170). For La Mav Organic stockists, visit their website here.
