eos Lip Balm Review

eos lip balms are one of those products that everyone seems to own (in the US anyway), so I was excited to finally try them out. In Australia, you can pick them up from online or from Costco (Kaz picked some up for me), and they cost about $3-7 each depending on the flavour and how you got them.

What’s in them

There are slightly different ingredients in each flavour, but these are the common ingredients in the balms:

Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Beeswax/Cera Alba (Cire d’abeille), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate, Sodium Isostearoyl Lactylate, Water, Sodium Hyaluronate, Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf/Stem Extract, Tocopherol, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Limonene, Linalool

The lip balms are advertised as 100% organic and 95% natural, which may be why they sometimes grow mould – natural preservatives aren’t as effective as synthetic ones.

Performance

The scents are probably the most outstanding feature of eos’s balms, and I really appreciate a good scent. Honeydew Honeysuckle is my absolute favourite – the melon is nice and brightly artificial without being too plastic – but all of the scents smell really delicious. The packaging is also adorable – the colours are cheerful and the little egg shapes are adorable.

But the downside comes when they go on the lip – I was ready to love these, but they’re pretty average. While these balms are smooth, they don’t melt into your lips like a really moisturising balm would. They feel like they’re mainly sitting on the surface, and the effect disappears quickly. While they’re likeable and make adorable gifts and stocking stuffers, they’re not the most effective product – the more boring Nivea Repair and Protection still takes the crown for me!

I remember when these were ALL the rage. I got a few through friends and family travelling overseas, and loved the novelty at first, I finished a whole one! But then I realised that they actually weren’t very good at hydrating my lips!

I’m trying to finish mine so I can justify buying them all, but I end up using another balm over it! Sigh.

I love EOS lip balms because it really keeps my lips hydrated at all times. I also love the packaging and scent of it. I am thinking of trying out that Nivea Repair and Protection. So curious about it.

I actually quite like those balms as a base under lipstick. They do good enough job in the warmer months but I will definitely need something richer for winter. Honeysuckle is my favourite scent too 🙂

    Hi,
I have a question about sun protection (nothing to do with lip balms sorry) but you are one of my favourite ‘science-y’ blogs so thought you might be able to help.
There is a new sunscreen available in UK advertising itself as protecting against ‘Infrared-A’ (I don’t want to brand-name but you’ll find it via Google I’m sure)
I found this article about Infra-red-A:
    http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/706885_5
What is your opinion? Is this something new that I should be concerned about?
It’s new to me and I’m an SPF manic…
    Thanks

I had a brief look – I personally don’t think it’s much to worry about, but I’m prepared to be proven wrong when I do more digging!

There’s a shop at Melb Central that sell these. I’m very curious, when you get to the flat surface is there more underneath? Or is it just the dome part?

I’m nowhere near finished with mine, but from the looks of it, there’s a tiny bit under the flat surface.

I picked these up from Costco last year. I agree lovely scent however do do wonders to actually moisturise. I love the Blistex Intensive for proper hydration.

I’ve heard good things about Blistex, but I’m really not a fan of menthol so I haven’t been able to check them out!

I’ve just never been a fan of these. I love the designs and I love the scents, but I agree — they just don’t moisturize the lips well. Too bad!
