I’ve been trying all the products, and I have to say I’m pretty impressed by some of them!
- The Primer is probably my favourite product so far, but I’ve also heard of it working horrifically for some other people. Silicone primers melt off my oily skin, but this leaves my skin grippy. If your skin also hates silicone primers, this might work for you too.
- The Liquid Foundation in Golden Beige is a perfect match for my summer skin. It has decent coverage and applies really nicely with a damp sponge.
- Crop’s Lipstick formula is the best natural formula I’ve tried so far. The two shades are really pretty your-lips-but-better colours.
The ones I like less:
- The Lip Balm is the first I’ve seen that comes in wooden pencil form, which has great novelty value, but it does mean you’ll need to sharpen it a lot, and the product is a lot smaller than it looks. It does make it easy to apply neatly though.
- The Quad format of the blush, bronzer and highlighter is pretty, but it makes it less easy to apply the same each time. On the flip side, it means that it’s easy to customise the shade you want, if you want to go for a slightly different shade. It’s personal preference really, but I prefer the one colour.
- I’m not a huge fan of the flip-top compacts – the clear window feel flimsy, and there are no mirrors which always makes me sad.
I do like how there’s specific “X-free” and “X% naturally derived” information for each product, but I’m still not happy with their fear-mongering marketing, which has gotten a bit more intense since the skincare launch. For example:
- “Natural” at the front of every product, even when the product is only 80% naturally derived, and natural doesn’t mean anything about safety or quality
- “No GMOs” even though there’s nothing wrong with GM technology. From the website: “Associated risks with using GMO’s can be immune problems, allergies,
inflammation and damage to other internal organs.” Um, what? No more than conventional crops… - “No petrochemicals” even though there’s nothing wrong with cosmetic-grade petrochemicals, and I’m pretty sure the plastic packaging is pure petrochemicals
- “No mineral oil” even though there’s nothing wrong with it, and they’ve already covered it with “no petrochemicals” so they’re clearly targeting people who haven’t done the minimum Googling required to realise mineral oil is a petrochemical. Also from the website: “Mineral oil can clog pores, over-saturate the skin and can inhibit the regeneration of skin cells” – I’d like to see what evidence they have of this, because as far as I know it doesn’t exist.
- “No sulfates” even though makeup usually doesn’t contain sulfates
And so on. There’s a lot more questionable stuff on this page of their website. It’s a pity because the products are pretty good and the price points are reasonable.

You can buy Crop in Coles supermarkets, and on the Crop website.
This range was provided for editorial consideration, which did not affect my opinion. For more information, see Disclosure Policy.
I was sent a lot of the products and definitely found them hit and miss. I do really like the lipstick and primer, and also dislike the pencil packaging of the lip balm! I really dislike the blush/bronzer/highlighter though, they are just way too sheer!
Tasha // shiwashiful.
I think they’d work well on pale girls! I have this problem with Benefit too – most of their stuff refuses to show up on my skin 🙁
The packaging kind of reminds me of H&M/F21 packaging, which basically means cheap looking, not so great.
I agree with you about the fear mongering marketing – it can turn me off many brands. And lol @ the packaging being a petrochemical. What would modern life be without PLASTIC??
I love plastic! It’s fantastic. I’d rather have biodegradable plastic because of the waste issue, but I have zero problem using petrochemical-based beauty products!
But…but.. their face primer has Sodium Hydroxide in it and that is an evil caustic chemical! It turns oil into SOAP!
Seriously though, you can make any ingredient scary sounding. I dislike using petrochemicals because they don’t break down in the environment readily, and I have enough digestive health problems without accidental consumption of mineral oil in my lip products. If anything, using natural ingredients make it easier to say what/where a product game from, rather than chemical names which can be derived from multiple sources, and the source isn’t necessarily labeled (IE Glycerin and Squalene, which can have both plant and animal sources)
The problem with natural products though, is that something like “apple fruit extract” tells you it came from an apple… but not much else. Was the apple harvested in spring or summer? Which variety of apple was it? Is it a water or a solvent extract? How was it extracted (cold, hot, steam, pressure, crushed)? Where was the apple grown? All of those will affect the proportions of the chemicals and active ingredients in it, whereas “glycerin” will always be a specific ratio of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms joined in a specific structure, no matter the source.
