I’m currently in love with NYX’s Butter Glosses. I know I’m a little slow to get on this bandwagon, but I’ve never been a fan of sticky glosses and these have the syrupy, stringy texture of honey so I was hesitant to try them. The delicious vanilla scent eventually won me over though!

NYX Butter Glosses are lightly tinted glosses that leave a natural finish on your lips. They come in a clear screw-top tube with a doe foot applicator, and NYX have done an amazing job matching the colour of the plastic on the caps with the colour of the actual product so it looks a lot like opaque packaging when new.

The Butter Glosses have a pretty stringy and sticky texture which worried me a bit, but after application, the texture is a lot less sticky and shiny. They remind me a bit of a tinted lip balm, like Revlon’s discontinued Lip Butters that I loved. They also have the moisturising power and low maintenance of a lip balm, but on the flip side they also have the staying power of a relatively long-lasting lip balm (a few hours without eating and with minimal drinking). I’ve found them very handy for layering on top of drying matte lipsticks halfway through the day, when your lip skin decides to leave the nest in highly unsexy flakes that only get worse when you try to apply more lipstick.

Like most NYX products, these come in a mind-boggling array of shades: there are 34 in the Butter Gloss range. Here are the ones I’ve tried:

  • Eclair – a cool lilac-toned pink
  • Crème Brulee – warm brown pink
  • Strawberry Parfait – cool medium pink
  • Apple Strudel – light coral pink
  • Cherry Pie – bright apple red

I usually don’t use cool-toned lipsticks as they tend to look weird against my warm-toned skin, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that Eclair worked fine on me if I used a thin enough layer – the sheer tint blends in with your natural lip colour quite well. I didn’t like the sticky feeling of a thick layer, so I haven’t been wearing these for the colour though I’ve seen some reviews that say the colour can be built up. If you’re after more pigment, I’d recommend the Intense Butter Glosses instead (scroll down!)

There’s also a more pigmented version of the Butter Glosses: the Intense Butter Glosses. These are still shiny, but have a lot more tint in them, more like highly moisturising lipsticks. They’re surprisingly resistant to budging. When I applied these the first time I expected it to end up all over my face within the hour, but with a little bit of care I managed to avoid embarrassment all day! Instead of a doe foot applicator, the Intense Butter Glosses have a flatter paddle, which makes it easier to control. I’ve heard that some people prefer to apply them with a lip brush for better precision, but I had no issues.

There are 24 shades to choose from. I’ve tried these three:

  • Sorbet – bright coral pink
  • Tres Leches – brownish pink
  • Chocolate Crepe – mauve brown

Unfortunately I found that Sorbet and Tres Leches were too light on my pigmented lips to look good once the colour started fading, which was pretty quick. It needs reapplication after eating and transfers if you’re not careful. I didn’t have any feathering but I’ve read that it can happen, especially with darker colours. I’ll definitely be picking up more of the darker shades!

If you’re Australian, Priceline will be stocking NYX products from next week, so you can see them in person before you buy. They’re also available in Target, but I’ve heard that Priceline will have a more comprehensive range.

  1. NYX Butter Gloss has amazing color choices along with super shiny results on the lips. I had trouble finding a neutral color that wouldn’t wash me out. “Angel Dood cake” is neutral with a hint of pink . Looks nice on fair skin. “Tiramisu “ is another nice choice, but can wash a fair skinned girl out slightly , but is a nice choice for a natural glossy look.
Darker tones – “Cranberry Biscotti “ great color. Also, “Devils Food Cake” is a great choice. They look very dark in the tube, but look very nice on for a splash of color.
Love the Butter Gloss feel on my lips very smooth and shiny. Feels moisturizing and comfortable. Try them you won’t be sorry, and for the price you can’t lose.
