I love the look of matte liquid lipstick, but my lips are very prone to drying out so I’ve been hesitant to use them. When I heard that Eccentric Cosmetics had a line of matte liquid lipsticks that didn’t turn your lips into the Sahara, AND came in little sample vials, I had to get my hands on some!

The 1.2 mL sample vials are very cute and fun-sized – about 4 cm/1.5 inches tall, and contain a doe foot applicator. They’re not a good investment in terms of price per mL, but I’ve never ever finished an entire lipstick in my life, and I have terrible luck with lipsticks that look great in swatches but not on my lips. If you’re anything like me, this is a great opportunity to try a whole bunch of colours before buying the full sized product.

All of Eccentric’s matte lipsticks have the same ingredients listed, so I’m guessing a lot of the variation is due to the batch or the specific pigments in each.

Ingredients: Cyclomethicone, Isododecane, Dimethicone, Castor Oil, Sorbitan Olivate, Candelilla Wax, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin May Contain: Titanium Dioxide, Tin Oxide, Iron Oxides, Manganese Violet, Synthetic Flurophogopite, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Yellow #5, Orange #5, Red #6, Red #7, Red #21, Red #27, Red #40, Blue #1

Here are the individual shades:

Potala Palace – Deep burgundy red. Potala Palace s a very flattering vampy shade that would suit a lot of skin tones. It leaves behind a bright pink-red stain that’s the same as those “mood lipsticks”, from the Red #27 in the ingredients.

The formula is amazing – it goes on quite liquid, spreads easily and dries quickly to a matte. It takes 1-2 thin coats for opacity, although if you put on thicker coats it will flake and crack a little. It’s comfortable throughout the day although it does transfer a little, especially when eating. The best thing is that it doesn’t dehydrate your lips as you wear it, which has happened to me with way too many matte lipsticks, where it looks great at the beginning but you flake and dessicate throughout the day.

Taj Mahal – pinkish-red. This is scarily fluorescent in the tube but goes on as a vivid red that’s bright, but not unwearably bright. It has the same great formula as Potala Palace.

I swatched all the colours in a three hour marathon session with natural lighting and the camera on the auto setting, hence the slight variation in lighting (I’ve adjusted them a bit in Photoshop to try to even out the colours, but some colours do weird things regardless). I ended with Taj Mahal and as you can see, my lips were in great condition. I wore Taj Mahal for the rest of the day through two meals – here’s what my lips looked like afterwards:

Most of the lipstick layer is gone, but the stain left behind is even, and it matches the original lipstick.

Forbidden City – Brick red, and actually matches the orangey-red colour of lacquerware. Same awesome formula.

Cappadocia – Dusty rose pink, a nice slightly cool-toned my-lips-but-better shade. Same awesome formula.

Door to Hell – Metallic red. This was quite dense with frosty shimmer and looks a little futuristic. Lovely and smooth.

These were a little more difficult to work with. I think it’s because the colour didn’t match my lips as well, so thicker layers were required to cover up the underlying colour, but cracked more easily, and patchiness was more noticeable.

Kilimanjaro – Eggplant purple. This is a relatively safe unusual colour that doesn’t wander too far out of red/pink territory. It doesn’t apply quite as smoothly and evenly as the pinks and reds, but it isn’t very noticeable in person, only in these close-up swatches.

Iguazu Falls – Dark velvety purple. This one was a bit patchy on my lips, and turned out very dark and gothy when it was on. I asked Anna, the owner of Eccentric Cosmetics, whether it was meant to be like this and she confirmed that it wasn’t – this colour tends to separate in the bottle and needs to be shaken, but I think little sample vial doesn’t allow very thorough shaking. Still, the patchiness isn’t too visible from a normal distance.

Vík í Mýrdal – Dark grey. This was my favourite of the unusual colours – it’s a blue-tinted grey and applies beautifully, though to hide the pink edges of my lips I probably should’ve used a lip brush. I’m not sure what other make-up to wear with it though to avoid looking sickly though! Maybe lots of blush and highlight, with a dark smoky eye.

Son Doong – Black base with a strong copper/gold duochrome. This was the only outright disappointment for me. The shimmer is very pretty but didn’t show up much, and the black base was patchy and didn’t dry down properly. Again, Anna confirmed that it shouldn’t behave like this.

Overall, I’m really impressed with these lipsticks, particularly the pinks and reds! Out of the unusual colours I’ve tried, Kilimanjaro and Vík í Mýrdal are my favourites. The non-drying formula was way more comfortable than I was expecting.

  1. I discovered this brand a couple of months ago and bought a few of the little sample sizes to try. I love the ones that I have, especially the duo-chrome ones (Giza, Cano Cristalis). Forbidden City is basically my favorite red shade. I will be buying full sizes of the ones I have I think. Thanks for the swatches, now I also want Door to Hell and Potala Palace.

  2. i’ve tried the colourpop line. the ultra mattes are very long lasting and takes coconut oil to get off at the end of the day but i feel that that make the lips a bit dry. the ultra satin formula feels better on your lips but doesn’t last as long. as for the lippie stix, they have different ones but i do prefer the matte or matte x formula.
do you think you’ll try them out? i’d love to see your opinion on them. cause one in particular leaves a bright pink stain on my lips and i didn’t realize it was from the red 27. it doesn’t have red 27 but red 21. was wondering if it had the same effect.

  3. I have been eyeing Eccentric Cosmetics forever! Their primer has great reviews too and I’m thinking of trying that out as well! I’m waiting for Boxing Day to roll around to get a discount 😛 So nice to see you feature an indie brand.
