My poor neglected hair. I’ve really tried to look after it, but unfortunately I have no willpower so I’ve been pretty slack. Luckily, I’ve found a few lazy ways to try to keep my hair OK with a minimum of effort!

Luxcurly Rotating Curling Iron

My Lazy Haircare Routine - Luxcurly Hair Curler

I’m still in love with the Luxcurly line of rotating curling irons for when I want curly hair but I also don’t want to burn my fingers or get DOMS from manipulating a wand around my head for an hour. The barrel spins with a touch of a button, so you can just clip your hair in, spin and it does the hard work for you! (You will still need to comb your hair and clip it and all that unfortunately – it’s not quite as good as a human hairdresser, but it’s pretty close!). Amazingly, it manages to make my stubbornly straight Asian hair hold a curl for hours, with the help of a ton of hairspray.

Nape Undercut

I’ve been using this Remington Barber’s Best Hair Clippers to give the boyfriend haircuts that are both cheap and don’t look weird. I think he got sick of me demanding a backrub for each haircut, so he convinced me to let him give me a nape undercut…just in time for winter. Oops! It’s a bit cold when I put my hair up, but it’s made my hair dry faster and feel lighter, plus it looks the same when I have my hair down or in a low ponytail.

Pineapple bun!

I tend to go to sleep with my hair wet (my mum tells me this is going to give me migraines) and in a ponytail, which ends up with my having very flat hair in the morning which doesn’t tease up very well. To pump up the volume a bit, I’ve been inspired by the “pineapple method” that’s recommended for curls – pulling your hair up into a high ponytail at the top of your head so you don’t sleep on your curls. I’ve been putting my hair up on the top of my head in a loose bun using one of these Lady Jayne Style Guards to reduce the ponytail bump. It’s been working pretty well so far, plus I don’t have that issue where my hair gets trapped under me when I roll over in my sleep.

SLS-Free Shampoos

As you can probably tell, I’m deep in a skincare research hole, and of course I bumped into SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), which turns up everywhere. Just like in face cleansers, SLS irritates the scalp, so I’ve been trying out some SLS-free shampoos.

My Lazy Haircare Routine

My favourites at the moment are Pure Hair Food’s Detox Shampoo, which smells like lemon and coconut, and Hask Monoi Coconut Nourishing Shampoo, which… also smells like coconut. Do we see a trend here? Along with the pleasant scent, these shampoos are both gentle and SLS-free, but they still make my hair feel clean. Pure Hair Food Volume Shampoo and De Lorenzo Essential Treatments Absolute Deep Cleanser are nice, but I’m still not used to the texture of my hair afterwards yet.

Products are press samples, which did not influence my opinion. For more information, see Disclosure Policy.

  1. An undercut would be such an interesting route to take in order to have my hair dry faster in the morning! I’d be to afraid to get it done though, especially with how thin my hair is, I’d feel like I’m missing to much >_<

  2. I had a sidecut once but now that it’s grown out I have this urge to shave my hair again… An undercut would be the most elegant solution, I think.

  3. I definitey have to get one of those irons one day! For now, I am hooked on the ‘bun at night routine’. A couple years ago, I started doing my hair in low bun at night and I haven’t looked back! I get almost perfect waves that don’t need any work but a comb through. It’s been my lazy (but looks like I spent an hour on my hair) daily routine. It’s awsome. My hair wasn’t long enough to do it up top of my head, but it is now so I will try that now 🙂

  4. Giving a backrub after each haircut is much better than going to hairdresser in my opinion :).
Interesting post, the hair clipper you were using is definitely one of best, I have to replace my old one too.

  5. As someone who has chronic migraines I can assure you it’s never a good idea to put wet hair into a pony tail or bun. While my migraines where not caused by putting wet hair up it did make them worse simply because of the weight. I had to cut most of my shoulder length hair off to a short bob 🙁

  6. Great Info! I tried some of the good brands but it made my hair dry and frizzy! I’m excited to try this shampoo. I’m sure this would definitely be a perfect hair solution? Thanks for the share, keep it up.
