Hybrid lip products are all the rage in new releases at the moment, and Maybelline’s Color Whisper range, which recently launched in Australia, is yet another example. They’re moisturising sheer lip colours – essentially, tinted lip balm for grown-ups. 8 shades have been released in Australia so far:

Lust for Blush – dusty natural pink
Orange Attitude – bright orange
Who Wore it Red-er – cool reddish pink
One Size Fits Pearl – subtle peachy nude
Petal Rebel – light pink
Pink Possibilities – warmer pink
Oh La Lilac – pale purple
Mad for Magenta – darker pinkish-purple

The coverage on most of these is quite sheer, which is great for giving a moisturising wash of colour on girls with pale lips. Unfortunately, my lips are naturally quite pigmented, so most of these don’t show up very well on me. Who Wore It Red-er and Mad for Magenta are lovely on me though, and some of the other shades which are yet to be released here look promising (in particular, I’m lusting after Berry Ready!). Here’s a lip swatch of Who Wore It Red-er – there’s decent colour payoff in one swipe, and it’s very easily buildable.

The staying power is OK – it won’t last through a meal and it’s not smudgeproof. They apply very smoothly and easily though, thanks to the silicone gel base, and are incredibly lightweight and comfortable, especially compared to some of the heavier balm-type lip colours, like Revlon’s Lip Butters. This also means that building up colour is a fair bit easier than with the Lip Butters. The packaging is also slimmer, which makes them easier to paint within the lines. At the moment, though, I’m still Team Lip Butters, simply because of the colour range, which is more pale-girl-friendly – I may well switch teams with the next release of shades!

Maybelline Color Whisper is available now from Priceline and other Maybelline stockists, at an RRP of $14.95.
