Crop Natural Skincare is a new brand hitting the shelves at Coles in Australia. I’m usually very skeptical when it comes to “natural” skincare lines – I firmly believe in the benefits of things like mineral oil and petroleum jelly and preservatives, and hate when brands try to upsell consumers by scaremongering about “chemicals” – but this brand has won me over with their well-formulated products and minimal demonising of synthetics.

My favourite product is the Gentle Cleansing Gel ($12, 125 mL). It lives up to its name – it’s really gentle and non-stripping, with no sulfate surfactants, but very effective at the same time, getting rid of all my make-up with one wash. It’s also packaged conveniently in a plastic pump bottle which is perfect for using in the shower. It does taste a little weird, but most people won’t have that problem if they’re less clumsy than me (likely).

Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Decyl Glucoside, Peg-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate, Eucalyptus Radiata Leaf/Stem Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Oil, Melaleuca Leucadendron Cajaput Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Glycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Alcohol, Citric Acid

The Daily Facial Moisturiser ($12, 125 mL) has a light citrus scent. It’s mostly water-based with a few humectants and emollients, making it great for non-greasy hydration, but people with dry skin might want to layer an oil on top.

Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Cetyl Alcohol, Ceteareth-20, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Tocopherol, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Seed Extract, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract, Citrus Nobilis (Mandarin Orange) Peel Oil, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Myristica Fragrans (Nutmeg) Oil, Ocimum Basilicum (Basil) Oil, Equisetum Arvense Extract, Arctium Lappa Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Alcohol

Crop’s Hypoallergenic Double Sided Facial Wipes ($6, 25 wipes) are also a nifty product. They’re deluxe-sized wipes, with a rough side that has little microbeads embedded in it, and a smooth side. While the plastic microbeads will eventually find their way into the water system, it’ll take a lot longer than washing them down the drain, hopefully reducing their environmental impact. The rough side is a bit harsher than I’d like, but I do like how easy it is to evenly exfoliate with the wipe.

Aqua, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Isopropyl Myristate, Olea Europaea Fruit Oil, Cetearyl Isononanoate, Ceteareth-20, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Glycerin, Ceteareth-12, Cetyl Palmitate, Polysorbate 20, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, 2-Bromo-2-Nitropopane-1,3-Diol, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate

Crop also have a range of various oils in handy dropper bottles.

Pure Rosehip Oil ($18, 20 mL) – My old favourite! Crop’s version is a little lighter than A’kin, and smells less musty than most rosehip oils so it’s beginner-friendly, but possibly contains less antioxidants and nutrients. It has vitamins A and C which make your skin brighter and more even in texture, and works great as a moisturiser too.

Pure Argan Oil ($18, 20 mL) – Argan oil comes from Morocco and is where all the “Moroccan Oil” type products get their names from (although those products tend to have a lot of silicones as well as argan oil). Argan oil is useful for hair, but also for skin – it has antioxidant properties and works very well for softening skin.

Pure Macadamia Oil ($15, 50 mL) – This is marketed for cleansing and care – in other words, for oil cleansing as well as moisturising. This is the first I’ve seen of a plain oil being promoted for oil cleansing – macadamia is pretty popular for the oil cleansing method (OCM), since it feels pretty light on the skin and isn’t too pricey. It’s housed in a convenient pump bottle that will get a lot of reuse from me.

Best things
– Budget-friendly and easy to find
– Gentle products
– Hygienic packaging
– Lightly scented
– Range includes pure oils aren’t usually very easy to find
– Excluded ingredients (e.g. animal byproducts, parabens, phthalates) are clearly labelled

Worst things
– Paraben-free (possible bacterial contamination, but good packaging)
– Contain essential oils with possible irritants (but not a lot)
– No “proper” actives apart from small amounts in vegetable oils (e.g. vit A and C in rosehip oil)
– Only one moisturiser option

Overall this is a solid, if limited, budget range – I hope they’ll release some more products to supplement these, like a sunscreen-containing moisturiser and a heavier cream. I’m very impressed with the products so far, especially the cleansing gel which is one of the best cleansers I’ve ever tried, especially considering the price!

  1. I really like the packaging of these products and they seem pretty great for a budget range. I’d like to check them out though I probably won’t buy anything anytime soon. I like the sounds of the cleanser and macadamia oil though!

  2. I recently purchased their Pure Rosehip Oil for my face and neck. It’s beautiful. Reminds me that I don’t need to spend a million bucks on myriad other products to keep my skin looking and feeling great. A winner.

  3. So I tried the Crop natural primer this morning..end result being 15 minutes late to work as all I had to wash off all my unblended make up just to rid the stuff from my face. It’s sticky and horrible with absolutley no blend factor at all. Very similar to ‘Nude’s’ idea of a natural primer. Sorry this is a waste of money even if it was only $17 I’d rather go with out.
